Chickens are
inquisitive and gentle birds, but for millions of chickens,
every single day of their short lives is
horrifying.
From the
time laying hens are 18 weeks old until they are slaughtered a
year and a half later, they spend every minute in barren battery
cages. These tiny, faeces-saturated metal cages are stacked on
top of each other in giant warehouses. Each chicken has
only a space about the size of a piece of paper, and
the birds aren't able to move about or flap their
wings.
The birds must constantly
jostle and fight for space, which sometimes causes broken bones
and other painful injuries. These birds are never given the
chance to breathe fresh air or feel grass beneath their
feet.
Chickens who survive this
torture are eventually slaughtered, and their emaciated little
bodies are turned into "cheap meat" or used in cat and dog
food.
